surfaces

This may sound blasphemous coming from an architect, but lines don’t exist. Even wires or ropes, which resemble lines, are solid masses. While we spend years learning to draw lines, they only represent solid edges. You can’t build a line. Surfaces are the key to artistic portrayal of objects. It is on them that form enhancing characteristics of color, pattern and texture reside. Over time, patina, through both encrustation and deterioration provides new “skin”, and a wealth of abstraction opportunity.
